They regarded it as the dwelling place of God and held the view that one must learn to perceive the heart not merely as a single organ, but as a part of the universe. The heart was given to us so that we might connect with the Supreme, so that we might discover and fulfill the law inscribed within it. Jan van Rijckenborgh says:
“Read the letter in your own heart and act upon it.”
The Rose of the heart, the primordial atom, is a miraculous secret; it is like a mirror, a mirror of mystery.
The Sufi spiritual tradition speaks of the heart as a chalice that reflects the universe; in Greece, the heart was described as a mixing vessel, while Hermes exclaimed:
“Plunge into this mixing vessel, O souls who know why you were created.”
